They traveled from New York City to Ghana, West Africa to take part in a 13-hour concert entitled Soul to Soul. The concert was a celebration of 14 years of Ghana's independence from British rule. For most of these artists it was their first trip to Africa. For the African American musicians, this was a journey about personal roots, the ancestral homeland, history, discovery, loss, pain and joy. Directed by Academy Award winner Denis Sanders the concert film/documentary had a limited theatrical run in 1971. It now returns restored with the original edit reconstructing each scene using high quality 2K transfers from the original film elements, which were shot in the 4:3 aspect ratio. The soundtrack has been digitally remastered. Soul to Soul is an electrifying concert film that features its players at the peak of their powers. The Ike & Tina Turner Revue deliver fiery renditions of 'River Deep-Mountain High,' 'Soul to Soul,' a cut specifically written for this concert; and Otis Redding's 'I've Been Loving You Too Long.' Wilson Pickett, the most popular American artist known to West Africans at the time, delivers a rousing finale of 'In the Midnight Hour,' 'Funky Broadway,' and 'Land of a 1000 Dances.' Gospel/Soul family group the Staples Singers were on hand to perform 'When Will Be We Paid' and 'Are You Sure.' Les McCann and Eddie Harris introduced many to jazz via spirited performances of 'The Price You Gotta Pay to Be Free' and 'Hey Jorler,' the latter featuring local Ghanaian artist Amoah Azangeo. Santana, with guest percussionist Willie Bobo was the wild card. The group only had one African American member but given its reliance on Afro-Cuban and Latin American rhythm constructs played the most African-sounding music of any with 'Black Magic Woman'/'Gypsy Queen' and 'Jungle Strut.'"

This double LP of instrumental Hindustani, Carnatic and folk 78rpm shellac records from India comes with a full color 12-page insert of gramophone record ephemera, shops, labels, manufacturing details and graphics. The LPs feature over 25 artists recorded between 1904 and 1959 playing a panoply of instruments: jalatarang, dilruba, sarod, clarionet, pakhawaj, violin, been, kazoo, shehnai, tabla, sarangi, sitar, vina and more. Artists include Imdad Khan (the first sitarist ever recorded), Ahmedjan Thirkhawa, Bundu Khan, Amir Hussain, Allauddin Khan (who taught Ravi Shankar), and others both forgotten and revered. The Indian classical instrumental tradition is one of incredible proficiency and expressiveness using instruments and techniques created over generations that seem to perfectly and uniquely compliment Indian culture, landscape and tradition. The first time on any format for Pier Paolo Pasolini's controversial 1975 vision of the Marquis De Sade's 120 Days Of Sodom, featuring beautiful and discordant classical compositions, in stark contrast to the shocking and cruel events unfolding onscreen. Three weeks before the scandalous release of Salò, or The 120 Days Of Sodom, Pasolini was brutally murdered in Ostia, Italy. In the wake of the tragedy, legendary composer Ennio Morricone wrote "Addio a Pier Paolo Pasolini" (Goodbye to Pier Paolo Pasolini) for the late filmmaker, included in the final edit. Following the narrative of one of Pasolini's defining cinematic moments, the soundtrack opens with Ennio Morricone's "Son Tanto Triste," descends into the melancholic minor chords of Bach, Chopin, Orff, Puccini, and Graziosi, incorporates sinister renditions by the cast, and includes Morricone's own somber tribute to the director. Disgusted by the flood of crass sexploitation movies which filled the space opened up by his Trilogy Of Life, Pasolini turned to the most nihilistic thinker in European history for what became his final film. His version of De Sade's 120 Days Of Sodom, amplified with motifs from Dante's Inferno, confronts the ultimate implications of fascism in a series of sexual and moral atrocities. Hogan, The Hawk & Dirty John Crown sounds like the soundtrack of a blaxploitation movie from the early '70s and, packed with funky fusion and smoother orchestral numbers, it is basically that. Featuring a veritable who's who of killer library break snakes, it's not hard to see how this commands over £350 on secondary markets. This beautifully presented reissue, part of Be With's fresh campaign with the legendary library label Music De Wolfe, is well overdue. Recorded for De Wolfe in 1972, Hogan, The Hawk, Dirty John Crown is a fantastic start-to-finish listen. The flute-funk of Hawkshaw and Parker's opener "The Hawk" comprises driving, fuzzy, wah-wah-drizzled bell-laced breaks with synths and basslines to murder for. Up next, Haseley's "The Happening" is a carefree, rhythmic builder with strings and horns. Hawkshaw and Parker's amazing "Main Chance" is likely the reason you're here; it's a moody, beaty proto-hip-hop banger; all rolling drums and flute-laced, organ-drenched, synth-funk breaks. The cool AF "Hogan Baby" has a soft, rounded, bluesy feel. Grant's pounding "Dirty John Crown" brilliantly conjures swirling string-swept serenity atop driving, incisive drama-funk breaks. Hawkshaw and Parker come roaring back with the murky, creeping crime-funk of "Swarf" with killer basslines underpinning slow-mo high-class flute-funk. Reg Tilsley enters the fray with the bright, snappy, carefree "Turnover." The brief "Tarantula" gets listeners back on track with the driving crime funk breaks, super clean yet brooding. Side 2 opens with the car chase swag of Haseley's dramatic, driving "Precinct". Haseley's rolling "Sidewinder Version 1" is robust and exuberant with bouncy horns before a cracking Parker-Hawkshaw one-two featuring the tense "Pressure" and the deeply soulful "Call Me", a relaxed, medium-tempo organ feature. With building piano and strings Gordon Grant's excellently titled "Scorch" is as aggressive and dramatic as you'd hope. Hawkshaw and Parker's furtive flute-funk of "Digger" precede the light, melodic and romantic themes of Tilsley's "Marianne" whilst "Sidewinder Version 2", a faster iteration of Track B2 sees Haseley close out this remarkable set in bouncy, bright fashion. The audio for Hogan, The Hawk, Dirty John Crown has been meticulously remastered by Be With regular Simon Francis, ensuring this release sounds better than ever. Cicely Balston's expert skills have made sure nothing is lost in the cut whilst the records have been pressed to the highest possible standard at Record Industry in Holland. The original, iconic sleeve has been restored as the finishing touch to this long overdue re-issue.

The first time on any format for Pier Paolo Pasolini's controversial 1975 vision of the Marquis De Sade's 120 Days Of Sodom, featuring beautiful and discordant classical compositions, in stark contrast to the shocking and cruel events unfolding onscreen. Three weeks before the scandalous release of Salò, or The 120 Days Of Sodom, Pasolini was brutally murdered in Ostia, Italy. In the wake of the tragedy, legendary composer Ennio Morricone wrote "Addio a Pier Paolo Pasolini" (Goodbye to Pier Paolo Pasolini) for the late filmmaker, included in the final edit. Following the narrative of one of Pasolini's defining cinematic moments, the soundtrack opens with Ennio Morricone's "Son Tanto Triste," descends into the melancholic minor chords of Bach, Chopin, Orff, Puccini, and Graziosi, incorporates sinister renditions by the cast, and includes Morricone's own somber tribute to the director. Disgusted by the flood of crass sexploitation movies which filled the space opened up by his Trilogy Of Life, Pasolini turned to the most nihilistic thinker in European history for what became his final film. His version of De Sade's 120 Days Of Sodom, amplified with motifs from Dante's Inferno, confronts the ultimate implications of fascism in a series of sexual and moral atrocities. Nagoyaka Na Kaze / 和やかな風 (Quiet Wind) is a collection of forward-thinking electronic experiments sourced from central Japan -- co-curated by Nagoya artist abentis for Facta & K-LONE's Wisdom Teeth imprint. The project profiles a close-knit community of music makers operating in and around the Japanese city of Nagoya: one of the country's most populous and industrial cities, but one all too often overlooked in terms of its cultural significance. Curated in close collaboration with local scene organizer Yuya Abe -- aka abentis -- the record seeks to capture the creative energy of a community of artists making hard-to-define, future-facing electronic music away from the clamor of the bigger cities. Spiritually, Nagoya fits the mold of cultural hotbeds like Bristol, Detroit or Melbourne, showing that some of the most innovative creative communities form away from the glare of the capital cities. The city's music scene is characterized by a freedom to mix genres and an open-door approach to creatives of all disciplines. The artists featured come from a diverse set of backgrounds, ranging from hip-hop to noise music, but have found a common collective identity in their omnivorous approach to genre. As such, the record moves fluidly between shimmering ambient and new age, psychedelic minimal house, abstract, low-slung downtempo, and spaceage steppas. Responsible for bringing artists like Basic Channel, Mala and Jan Jelinek to the city, baptisma, the crew's eldest member and de-facto scene leader, has been crucial in establishing underground electronic music in Nagoya since the '90s, and now helps cultivate the next generation of local talent. The record's art direction was led by Yudai Osawa -- in-house designer for Kankyō Records, the much-loved Tokyo record shop run by H. Takahashi -- and features original photos by Hayato Watanabe. The label ORED Recordings was founded in 2013 by Circassian friends and fellow musicians Bulat Khalilov and Timur Kodzoko, in order to start an activity which is dedicated to documenting and preserving the traditional and post-traditional music of the North Caucasus. Khalilov and Kodzoko were excited about this music as it sounded like a force that transcends borders and in which time dissolves and community becomes the only compass. Through hundreds of field recordings from communal gatherings, local festivities, and family meetings, the label has captured a wide range of individual voices and their unique acoustic manifestations. All recordings on this album capture the raw expressiveness of mountainside villages. Music performances being played by people who dedicate their love to music and an additional willingness to share intimate emotions. Whereas most academic ethnomusicologist travel around the world in order to study foreign cultures, Bulat Khalilov and Timur Kodzoko were fascinated by what they just heard in the familiar regions of their then home town Nalchik. In resolut contrast to Russian academic circles they soon developed a DIY punk ethos for their far-reaching work, beginning to formulate their own language in the field of ethnomusicology and to push the traditions forward. However, the label's work goes far beyond mere preservation. The work of the label aims to reflect not only the great music of the Caucasus and its various communities but also to tell the stories behind it. They are stories of struggle, of independence, of working with historical memory in the present times of the 21st century. The compilation Music from the Caucasus provides a first introduction to the comprehensive work of ORED Recordings. For this collaborative release on TAL the recordings are being made accessible for the first ever time, all coming with extensive liner notes and yet unpublished photographs.
